Our quest began in the winter of 2003 when Russ found the item at left on eBAY. We set out to locate Paul Cox Field. Finally in June of that year we were able to locate it. Its site was by then the home of Terre Haute South High School but a public golf course that
predated it still exists. Parked across the street from its former site, on the driveway of the Rea Municipal Golf Course, Russ casually remarked to Evelyn, "I wonder how many more ghost airfields there are in Indiana? There can't be that many ..." We now have a list of over 450 airports in Indiana of which 350 or so are ghosts as of December, 2007.
A reprint of the Cox Catalogue as well as a copy of
a preliminary summary of Indiana Airport Information is now available through Ryle Publications. The book Airfields of Indiana will be released September 2008.

We wondered how many folks today visiting Terre Haute High School South realize they are on an early aviation field. Several phone calls later and a trip to a few historical societies surprised us with the fact no one had documented Indiana airports. Sure, they had material related to the most famous aviators. However,
beyond those accomplishments that regularly make the general history books, this twentieth century stuff was just "too new" to collect in the year of the 100th anniversary of powered flight. Our work was cut out for us.
Our quest has resulted in accumulating much information on Indiana aviation history. Most is in the form of documents and books. Thankfully, many of those few still with us seem eager to share what they remember. Sadly, most who lived an aviation life before 1950 have already preceded us "west".
Please contact us if you, a friend, or an acquaintance might have information or personal experiences to share from any era. We especially appreciate being allowed to digitally scan aviation photographs. It is our goal to preserve these, with accurate description as to their content, for future generations.

Aviation research is not all looking at old microfilm and newspapers in a library. Well, someone has to do it ... Talks and displays available for your group or event. Please inquire.
